Choosing A Septic System

At Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we're happy to walk you through each step of the septic system design and installation process, and our engineers will make recommendations based on what's best for you. There are, however, some things you should be thinking about in advance that will make the process easier:

  • Pump type: The pump is an important part of your septic system that keeps waste moving freely and prevents blockages. Septic pumps come in two types: centrifugal and turbine. As a rule, turbine pumps tend to be more reliable, but also more expensive. In most cases, your budget will determine which option is right for you.
  • Tank design: There are a number of different septic tank designs that are commonly used. The right choice comes down principally to the type of soil in your yard. Is your soil coarse and gravelly, sandy, or heavier in clay minerals? Knowing beforehand will help you choose an appropriate system.
  • Size: Size is, by far, the most important consideration in designing and installing a new septic tank. Your home's daily water usage will determine what size of septic tank you need, though, for most Syracuse-area properties, your tank should be at least 1000 gallons. For larger families or buildings using a lot of water (500+ gallons a day), a larger tank is a wise investment.
